Here Are the 9 Key Legal Services for Expats in Mexico:

#1 - Get Your Visa at the Consulate Back Home

  • Schedule Your Appointment - You need an appointment at your local Mexican consulate - which is very difficult to achieve, and may takes months. I will navigate the complicated online reservation system in Spanish and secure your appointment on your behalf.  Each family member applying for residency needs a separate appointment; they do not issue family appointments.
  • ​Document Review - I will find out which documents are needed for your appointment (different consultantes may request different items), and review them with you in advance of the appointment to make sure all is in order.
  • Reschedule if Necessary - In the event that your visa issuance is rejected or delayed, I will reshedule your appointment and help you complete any outstanding requirements and argue your case on your behalf if needed.

#2 - Exchange Your Visa For a Residency Permit at INM

  • Schedule Your Appointment at Immigration in Mexico - As soon as you receive your visa (and within 180 days of issuance), I will schedule your appointment at the INM office in Mexico near your future home.  Appointments may take weeks or months to secure, and I will book an appointment date within the requisite 30 days of entry into the country.
  • ​​Prepare Your Documentation - I will complete all the required forms and paperwork, and ensure they are complete.
  • ​​Accompany You To The Immigration Appointment - Either I or one of my team of English-speaking immigration specialists will accompany you to the INM office, prepare and present all the needed documents with the appropriate number of copies, and remain available to assist you throughout the appointment (which may take a full day).
  • ​Finalization - You will walk out at the end of the day with your Residency Card and your CURP, which is  an identification number. We will provide copies in digital format to keep with your important records.

#3 - Get Residency Through Family Reunification

  • You May Quality For Permanent Residency - As a child or spouse of a Mexican citizen.
  • You May Qualify For Temporary Residency - Based on marriage to a Mexican citizen or resident.
  • ​Preparation of Documents - We will prepare all the needed documents.
  • ​​Accompany You To The Immigration Appointment - One of my team of English-speaking immigraton specialists will accompany you to the local Immigration  office with the right number of copies of needed documents, and remain available to assist you throughout the appointment (which may take a whole day).
  • Finalization - You will walk out at the end of the day with your Residency card and your CURP, which is similar an identification number.  We will provide copies in digital format to keep with your important records.

# 4 - Get Temporary Residency By Overstay Regularization

This is a special limited-time program to help foreigners affected by Covid travel restrictions, but which may be discontinued or changed at any time

  • Are You Qualified? - You may qualify for this special program if you have an expired visa, and have proof of having entered Mexico at least once in the prior 5 or so years - each office uses slightly different criteria.Once your visa is expired, we will check with INM to make sure you qualify for this program, or find a different INM office that will accept your application.
  • 4-Year Temporary Residency Permit  - Unlike the regular visa process, you may receive a 4-year Temporary residency permit, without the usual requirement of renewing it annually.
  • ​No Financial Solvency Requirements - You do not need to submit any financial documentation - so this is a great option for some who would not otherwise qualify based on income or assets.
  • ​You Pay All 4 Years of Fees at Once - This program requries payment of an overstay penalty, and all 4 years of renewal fees, which could cost around $1,000 ingovernment fees.
  • No Need To Leave Mexico - This program allows you to remain in Mexico and apply directly through your local immigration office, rather than being forced to go to your home country and apply through the Consulate.

# 5 - Get Your RFC Tax ID at the SAT Office

This is your Tax ID number, and is being required more frequently than in the past

  • You Must Get Your RFC Tax ID if You Live or Work in Mexico -  This is a new requriement for residents, workers, and property owners, but there is a long wait list.
  • This is Administrated by SAT  - We will help you schedule your appointment online at a local SAT office, and make sure you have all your documents in order for your appointment.

# 6 - Get Married in Mexico as an Expat

This is a civil process and we can help you with the paperwork and process

  • File the Application - We will help you complete the 4-page application in Spanish, and help you gather all the needed documents.
  • ​Marriage by a Judge or Government Official - Your wedding can take place at the office of the Registro Civil, which is like the Justice of the Peace, or at a loication of your choosing, for an additional officiant fee.
  • ​Receive Your Official Documents- You will receive 2 different documents which record your marriage, and we will make sure you receive them.

 # 7 - Get Naturalized With a Mexican Passport

  • Do you qualify? - You can generally apply to become a Mexican national after holding your Permanent Residency permit for 5 years.
  • ​Issued in Mexico City Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - You will have to travel to Mexico City to complete this process.
  • General Knowledge Test - If you are under 60, you will be requried to complete an exam in Spanish to demonstrate knowledge of Mexican history, laws, and culture.  We will help to prepare you for this exam.
  • A Lengthy Process - This process may take up to 9 months from application to issuance.

    #8 - Change Your Name on Utility Bills as ID

    • ​Why is This Necessary? - Many  government agencies, organizations, and businesses will requrie you to show proof of residency by presenting either a water or electric bill in your name.
    • Difficulty in Changing the Owner's Name - The bills are generally issued in the name of the property owner, and are generally not issued to renters.
    • Preparing the Paperwork - Whether you own or lease your home, we can assist you in securing the name change on your utility bills through preparation of the required documentation.

    #9 - Get Your Work Permit to Work in Mexico

    • Do You Qualify? - If you receive an employment offer by a company authorized to hire foreigners, you can receive a Work Permit, which is tied to that employer.  This work permit can also qualify you for a Temporary Residency permit.
    • ​Does Your Employer Qualify? - Companies hiring foreigners must be registered with the Mexican government and INM, and must pay Social Security taxes on your behalf to the government.  Check with your potential employer to make sure they meet the government requirement.
    • If You Are Already a Permanent Resident - You generally do not need the government permission to work or a Work Permit, but you must advise INM of your employment, you must have a SAT Tax ID, and you must pay income taxes (which are very modest).
    • Benefits of Legal Employment - If you are employed in Mexico, you should qualify for free medical care though IMSS - Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social - with premiums paid by your employer.  You may also eventually be eligible to earn retirement like Social Security at age 65 after working for 20 years.

    Translation and Document Services

    • Certified Translator - Many documents must be translated from English to Spanish, and we can provide a certified translator recognized by the Mexican government to translate your documents.  You will be charged by the number of words.
    • ​Apostile - Many government processes require documents to be apostiled, or certified by the issuing governmental organization.This is a lengthy process, and we will help you through it, both back home and here in Mexico.
    • Cost Varies - Each case is unique, due to the complexity and length of the documents, and their source.  We will provide a written estimate of costs to help you with these services.
